As you can tell, our construction team is still working on portions of the float.  If you live around Mooresville, Indiana, you should attend the Old Settlers Parade to see our float in action!  The parade begins at Mooresville High School at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, and runs through downtown on its way to Pioneer Park.

I hope wormy gets connected by then.  A biology lesson I don't need.

Sky Wrangling

Last Saturday's Great Cow Drop at Greenwood Public Library (GPL) was a glorious success, mostly because I now have one of those skydiving bovines.  Actually, the event raised money for GPL, which is the main thing.

P.S.  At the 2011 Chick-fil-A Bowl, parachuting bovines dropped from the skies.  Well, from the dome ceiling, actually.  Who was firing the flak at them, I'd like to know!  Oh--that was just fireworks before the big event.  Want to know who won the football game?

We All Scream For Ice Cream

This evening in the MPL community room, Crafty Gal had her end-of-summer-reading ice cream social for her early literacy kiddies and their caregivers.  Everybody screamed for ice cream!  Well, it's no surprise that youngsters got pretty excited.  Who doesn't love ice cream?

Crafty Gal was really busy running the show, and Boss Lady was also assisting with serving, crafts and coordinating the fun. Scowl-Face slipped in to snap some photos.  As always, click the images to bigify.

The party was a HUGE hit!  What a great way to celebrate a successful summer reading program.

Skydiving Bovines @ GPL

Here's something you don't often see in a public library.

Skydiving moo-cows are landing in the lobby (by the patron services desk) at Greenwood Public Library (GPL).  No, it's not a bovine invasion; it's a preview of the parachuting Chick-fil-A mascots that I blogged about last week.

On Saturday, July 27, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, to raise funds for GPL, these cows will be jumping out of a helicopter hovering over Greenwood Middle School football field next to GPL.  For a $10 donation to the Library, you are entitled to one of the skydiving bovine, which you may redeem for a free meal at a local Chick-fil-A (more details at the event).  Plus, your donation gives you a chance to win prizes.  There are lots of great prizes available.

Join GPL this Saturday at 10 a.m. for food, crafts, games, and flying cows!  But watch out!  Those critters look mighty cute, but cows are heavy dudes.  Well, not these little guys, but, still.  Just saying.

Who Erased That Letter?  Just Asking

Take a gander (or goose--your call) at the monitor next to our adult information desk (in the Library's grand hall).  You can't miss it.  Just look for the group of patrons looking up, like in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), directed by Steven Spielberg.

P.S.  Here's a clip from Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) when all the earth scientists and technicians look up at the alien spacecraft as they begin communicating using a tonal vocabulary.  This is one of my favorite sci-fi movies.

Sisterhood of the Travelling Dress

Broadway Gal's Caldecott Button Dress is now on display at my Library, which is the first stop (naturally) on a hopefully statewide public library tour.  You could call it the sisterhood of the travelling dress.  Of course, Sammy the Toucan was a big part of the action.  As always, click the images to bigify.

 

The dress looks really cool, but, frankly, it looks a whole lot better with Broadway Gal wearing it.  Just saying.

The buttons go all around the front and back of the dress.  Too bad we couldn't get a photo of the back, but the bookshelves were too close for Scowl-Face to squeeze in.

Our Caldecott award-winning books are on the shelves immediately behind the dress.  They're ready to check-out, if you have an Evergreen Indiana library card.

Drop by to see the dress!  Maybe Broadway Gal will visit so she can model it for everybody.  Floor show!  Floor show!  Floor Show!  We could sell tickets.  Proceeds would help the Library buy more canned tuna-in-oil for moi--I mean, fund programs.  How about it, Broadway Gal?

Morris the Gnome?  As MPL Director?!

Okay, I don't mean to be harsh, but if Morris is my new boss, then I'm SOOOO outta here!

False alarm!  Crafty Gal has given moi the inside story.  Apparently, Morris is simply reading in our directors' gallery.  I guess all the reading tables were already taken.  Being a gnome (and, presumably, magical), he can levitate himself up there.  Or it's transparent tape.  Either way, Morris will be hanging out all next week as part of Crafty Gal's ongoing program for her early literacy kiddies to find.  Clever hiding spot, really.  The best place to hide is sometimes right out in the open.

P.S.  Lucky for us here at MPL, Morris the Gnome will NOT be our new boss.  But it got moi thinking about "Boss Man," by Gordon Lightfoot, from his LP Did She Mention My Name? (1968).

Old Settlers Approacheth

My minions were slow about photographing my readers' advisory book display, but it had been up for over a week.  Things move fast at my Library.  Mooresville's Old Settlers picnic, festival, and parade are fast approaching, and so Scowl-Face has created his own book display from the Indiana Roving Reporter Room collections.

When does the celebration begin?  The sign says August 4-5-6, but I'd check another source, just to be sure.

There are loads of great books about local history (Mooresville and Morgan County, as well as Hendricks County, which is literally on the north edge of town, and some general Hoosier historical texts).  Check them out using your Evergreen Indiana library card.

P.S.  Speaking of signing-up for something, "Sign on the Dotted Line," by Gerry Rafferty, appeared on his first solo LP, Can I Have My Money Back? (1971).  Rafferty co-composed the tune with his Stealers Wheel bandmate, Joe Egan.

Broadway Gal Hits the Red Carpet

At the recent American Library Association (ALA)/Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) Caldecott 75th anniversary banquet, Broadway Gal, former head of MPL youth services, appeared on the Kidlit Red Carpet wearing her button dress.  Want to see the video?  Naturally.

That wonderful dress will soon be on display at my Library!  Not with Broadway Gal inside, however.  After all, she has work to do at the Indiana State Library. 

Sammy the Toucan, our former early literacy spokescritter, was uncharacteristically quiet in the video, I noticed.  Camera shy?  Hard to imagine, knowing Sammy.

P.S.  "Buttons and Bows" (1947), composed by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, appeared in the movie The Paleface (1948), starring Jane Russell and Bob Hope.  The tune won the Academy Award for best original song.  Dinah Shore's cover (1947) topped Billboard's pop charts in 1948.

 

Almost Henny Penny

"The cows are falling!  The cows are falling!"  Well, it's nearly Henny Penny, if you've read the Chicken Little folktale.

Our friends at Greenwood Public Library will be having the Great Cow Drop fundraiser on Saturday, July 27, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  You know you want a parachuting cow!  They are SO cute and cuddly!  Your $10 donation to GPL entitles you to one of these skydiving dudes, as well as a chance to win some great prizes!  Want to see a prize list?  Moi, too.  But you'll have to visit the library to see it.

The Lady With the Red Hair will be there selling baskets to raise money for GPL.  I'd go moiself, but it's too far to walk to Greenwood, and I don't have a motor vehicle, although I am an excellent driver.
