Learn How to Make Your Very Own Movie!

Have you ever wanted to make your very own movie but don't know where to start?  Then we've got an upcoming program that you certainly won't want to miss.

On Saturday, September 8, 2018, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., in the library's community room, film director and screenwriter Demetrius Witherspoon will be sharing his experiences (and secrets) in making and financing motion pictures.  Mr. Witherspoon is CEO of DV Entertainment Pictures, which has produced the Submerge movie series.  For those playing along at home, that's these:

• Submerge:  The Chronicles of Ni're
• Submerge:  Ni're Reborn
• Submerge:  Echo 51
• Submerge:  Galaxy of Subversion (currently in development)

My library has DVD copies of Submerge:  Echo 51 and Submerge:  Ni're Reborn, as well as the novelization of Submerge:  Echo 51, available to checkout with your Evergreen Indiana library card.

We've got a nice display across from our circulation desk.  On the mannequin is the official "behind-the-scenes" movie crew t-shirt and one of the actual props used by characters in the film.  We even have a movie poster signed by Mr. Witherspoon!  The library's own Miss Catherine, whom I call The Couturier Kid, worked on costuming for Submerge:  Echo 51 (see our previous blog post for details).  The Decorinator and BizMeister created the display topper.  That's a galaxy.  It's pretty cool.  (Thanks, Couturier Kid, for letting us borrow the mannequin, t-shirt, and prop.)

The Couturier Kid Hits the Big Time

My library's Miss Catherine, whom I'm now calling the Couturier Kid, has hit the big time.  She served as a costumer in the movie Submerge: Echo 51 (2017), written and directed by Demetrius Witherspoon.  She made the front page of our local newspaper, as you can see here.  There's more to see below, if you click the photo (to bigify).

That's a pretty fine gig, I'll venture.  It must have been plenty exciting to have worked in a motion picture production.  Maybe she will drop my name if any of her future cinema projects need to hire a cat to play a role (lead, I'm thinking).  Central casting, you know where to reach moi.

If any of Miss Catherine's upcoming movies need a music soundtrack, I know a composer who has a master's certificate in movie and television music soundtrack scoring from Berklee College of Music.  He composes original music for my library's YouTube videos.  He's on Facebook, Reverbnation, and Soundcloud.  Some of his compositions have been performed publicly in the United States and Europe, and some have been recorded by various European musicians.  If you need music for your film or TV show, he's your dude.

Congratulations (or, as Summer would say, Concatulations) to the Couturier Kid for her success.  I see a great new career blossoming for her, and I'm never wrong.  (Mistakes are for minions.)  Once she's a famous Hollywood designer, I hope she remembers all the "little people" (and their felines) back at the library.  They can play extras, you know.  I see them standing around talking all the time (joke!).

Best Christmas Movie/Book Ever

While in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1944, Valentine Davies (1905-1961) wrote the story from which director George Seaton (1911-1979) wrote the screenplay for the movie Miracle on 34th Street (1947).  Davies was discouraged by the rampant commercialism that had invaded the Christmas holiday season, and so he wondered what the real Santa Claus would say if he were to walk into a modern American department store after Thanksgiving.  So he created this wonderful fictional tale of Kris Kringle, who lived in a senior citizens community home on Long Island but became the store Santa at Macy's Department Store on West 34th Street in Manhattan.

Following development of the movie, Davies wrote a novelization based upon the screenplay (and also elements from his original story).  The book is as good as the movie, and we have it available to checkout from our Evergreen Indiana catalog.  Our book trailer summarizes the plot.

Davies received the 1948 Academy Award for Best Writing, Original Story, while Seaton garnered Best Adapted Screenplay.  Edmund Gwenn, who played Kris Kringle in the movie, captured the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

The movie was remade in 1994, and I'm sure it was fine.  My minions said it was okay.  We're not big fans of remakes, but that's no reason not to watch it, if you want.

Treat yourselves to this wonderful book and the movie, too, which is also available in our Evergreen Indiana catalog.  There's a colorized version (2006), but it's better in the original black-and-white.  See if you can find a copy of the original.

I love this movie and book.  Okay, minions, time to read to moi, then we'll watch the film.  Snacks, sooner than later, minions.  Just saying.
