He Moved, Already

Torrey the Turkey is a swift little winged dinner stuffed dude.  He was riding our hobby horse, if you recall.

He was still there when my minions took this photo (below) last week.

He's not there now.  You can take a peek.  I'll wait.

So, where's Torrey hiding now?  Here's a hint.

That practically gives the game away!

Find Torrey, and then ask Crafty Gal for your prize.  Mine was a tuna-flavored feline snack.  No, I won't share.  Sorry.

Just 'Tween You and Moi

Just 'tween you and moi, some books have been reclassified in the MPL Youth Services Department.

'Tween Collection has been moved to Juvenile (J) stacks

Bet this wienerdog had something to do with this

(Yes, I checked the proper spelling of wiener.  You can look it up.  Apparently, the other popular spelling is also acceptable.)

Don't panic, 'Tweenies!  (Don't know who 'Tweens are?  This blog post has you covered.)  The 'Tween collection has NOT--repeat, NOT--been deleted (or, as we say in librarianspeak, "weeded" or "discarded") from our Evergreen Indiana catalog.  Everything has simply been relocated to our Juvenile collections.  (Those are the items with the call numbers beginning with the letter J.)  Look for them in J Fiction and J Nonfiction.  Easy as canned tuna-in-oil. Or pie, if you prefer.

Why did wienerdog move the 'Tween books?  Why do slobberdogs do anything?  To make people patrons happy, of course.  With most of our books collectively shelved under "J," they should be MUCH easier to find.

Hey, what's that on the shelves next to the former 'Tween section?

It's Cerberus!

Three-headed slobberdogs, I don't need.

Let our helpful staff know if you need any assistance locating the 'Tween (or other) items in their new digs.  We're masters of the know, after all.

Why You Like Us

Why do patrons like my Library?  We have a Facebook post for that. We've also got a post-it note display in our youth services department. We cover all the bases, for sure.  That's why we have Casey at the Bat in charge of our YS.

Great display, Crafty Gal!  We'd like to hear from you.  Just visit our Facebook Page and post a comment; or drop by the Library, grab a post-it note and pen, and have at it.  Whatever your reasons, we're glad to have you here at MPL, either physically or electronically.

Your Roving Reporter On The Go,

P.S.  "What I Like About You," by the Romantics, appeared on the band's self-titled debut album (1980).

Keeping a Low Profile, I'll Venture

Torrey the Turkey has gone missing!  As next week is Thanksgiving, he's keeping a low profile, I'll venture.

Nice Thanksgiving Book Display, Crafty Gal

So, where could Torrey the Turkey have gotten to?  (Okay, grammar police!  To where could Torrey have gotten?)  Find him and win a prize!  I hope it's canned tuna-in-oil, because I happen to know precisely where Torrey is hiding.  (Yes, I can be bribed.  Just saying.)

Your Roving Reporter On The Go,

P.S.  Let's reprise Crafty Gal's Thanksgiving video from last year, in case you missed it.

Our Discovery, Pretty Much

Lots of humans enjoy meditating.  We cats, of course, invented it.

Basic Feline Meditation Posture

You're Doing It Wrong, Buddha

Focus Your Attention

We have a new book trailer about meditation.  If you've never read Alan Watts, you're missing the spiritual boat.  Or maybe the peace train.

MPL Book Trailer #181
Still the Mind: An Introduction to Meditation, by Alan Watts

We made a book trailer for another of Alan Watts' classic books.

MPL Book Trailer #158
This Is It, by Alan Watts

My Library has loads of books, audio CDs, and DVDs about meditation.  They are available to check-out in our Evergreen Indiana online catalog, if you have an E.I. library card.

P.S.  Indian vedics (and, later, Indian and Tibetan Buddhists) shifted into cosmic consciousness by chanting mantras.  The sounds focused concentration and attention, as well as controlled breathing, during meditation.  An especially effective mantra was the Sanskrit "Om Mani Padme Hum," which is a prayer for compassion to the Bodhisattva AvalokiteÅ›vara (Sanskrit for "Lord who looks down"), an embodiment of the compassion of all Buddhas.  The Moody Blues were obviously intrigued by Eastern mysticism, religion, and philosophy.  Mike Pinder's "Om" completed the group's ground-breaking conceptual album, In Search of the Lost Chord (1968).  Pinder left the band in the late 1970s.  He is best known today for his audio recordings of children's stories.

P.P.S.  "One Step Into the Light" was another Mike Pinder masterpiece, which appeared on the Moody Blues LP Octave (1978).  Pinder's best tunes were about spiritual pursuits.

Take Five, Crickets!

Remember last month, when Casey at the Bat and Crafty Gal applied for an Indiana State Library (ISL) rock star startup kit for their youth services programs?

ISL Rock Star Startup Kit Video,
by MPL Youth Services

Guess what?  THEY WON!  Soon they will be playing a brand new ukulele! I wonder what that will sound like.

Ukulele Children's Song, "Mr. Clicketty Cane,"
composed by Peter Combe and
performed by Renata Jayne (2013)

Maybe Crafty Gal and/or Casey at the Bat will play their new ukulele for our digital video camera, much like Renata Jayne, a children's storyteller/musician from Brisbane, Australia who has a Facebook page and website.  Sounds like a great video series for our early literacy patrons!  Minions, make it so.

Glad to know that we won't be having so many awkward silences around the Library once our ukulele arrives.  Those crickets could use a rest.

Giddyap!

Torrey the Turkey has a new hiding spot in the MPL Youth Services Department.

Giddyap!

Hey, Crafty Gal!  Shouldn't Torrey be wearing a cowboy hat, a vest, a six-shooter, and some chaps?  Just saying.

This reminded moi of the cowboy (and Native American) who were toy figures but became real thanks to a magic cabinet.  I am, of course, talking about the classic children's tale, The Indian in the Cupboard, by Lynne Reid Banks.  Naturally, we have a book trailer, plus the book (and its sequels) is (are) available to check-out in our Evergreen Indiana online catalog.

P.S.  "Prairie Lullaby," composed by Billy Hill and recorded by Michael Nesmith, appeared on his (Nesmith's) LP Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash (1973).  Great country western tune any cowboy (or cowgirl, or even cow-kitty) would be proud to sing by the campfire to his or her youngster at bedding-down time.

Half-Flaps, Full Throttle!

November is, among other things, National Aviation History Month.  Naturally, we have a book display for that.

It's fun to read all about the history of aviation, and my Library has a bunch of books and videos devoted to the subject.  But there's no substitute for the real deal.

Hey!  Passengers Face Forward,
Seatbelts Secured, If You Please

That's Moi Flying a Stearman/Boeing N2S
("The Yellow Peril")

(Actually, my biplane is probably a reconditioned Stearman 75, but you get the idea.)

Richard Bach wrote great books about flying biplanes [Biplane (1966) and Nothing By Chance (1969), which is about piloting a Stearman], along with books about flying other planes [Stranger to the Ground (1963)].  Anybody who lived through the 1970s probably read his classic novel, Jonathan Livingston Seagull (1970).  Of course, we have a book trailer.

 MPL Book Trailer #156
Jonathan Livingston Seagull, by Richard Bach

If you've never flown in an open-cockpit airplane before, you should give it a whirl.  There is nothing like feeling the wind rush past as you climb toward the clouds.  It becomes a tactile experience, instead of merely visual and auditory.  Looking out a jet plane window in a sealed cabin just isn't the same.

Your Roving Reporter On The Go,

Cauli Le Chat

P.S.  "Flying," by the Beatles, graced the LP Magical Mystery Tour (1967).  It was the only song from that period to which all four members of the group were credited as composers.

Just Another Winged Dinner to Moi

Torrey the Turkey is hiding in my Library's youth services department.  But he can't hide from my sensitive sniffer.  As always, click the images to bigify.

Must be hiding in here somewhere

(Sniff!  Sniff!  Sniff!)
Now I've got the scent!

Seriously, Dude?  THIS is your hiding place?

That nameplate isn't fooling anybody

Nice shades, Torrey.  But we felines see through your disguise quite easily.  Just another winged dinner, I'll venture.

Crafty Gal has rather rudely mushed my bottom out the door!  She said that Torrey is a STUFFED turkey (aren't they all?  It's almost Thanksgiving!)  Okay, now she explained that Torrey is a plush toy (i.e., a stuffed animal).  Where's the fun in that for moi?  There's not even catnip tucked inside that bird.

Crafty Gal is now giving moi "the lecture" about how Torrey and I both "work" for the Library as spokescritters, and our rule is that staff cannot eat one another, no matter how tasty they might be.  Being a team player, I'm totally down with that.

Apparently, Torrey is part of Crafty Gal's early literacy programming.  Her preschool charges (and their caregivers) are supposed to search through MPL Youth Services to find where Torrey is hiding.  Do they win a prize if they find him?  For moi, I'd like canned tuna-in-oil, please and thanks.

Seriously, this search game is fun!  All of our young patrons should bring their caregivers in tow to our early literacy programs and join the excitement.  Maybe I'll get more tuna if patrons find Torrey.  Just saying, Crafty Gal.

Your Roving Reporter On The Go,

Cauli Le Chat

P.S.  Torrey the Turkey reminded moi of Clare Torry, who may be best known for singing on Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig in the Sky" (from the LP The Dark Side of the Moon [1973]). "Love is Like a Butterfly," composed by Dolly Parton and recorded by Clare Torry, was the theme song to the British television sitcom Butterflies (1978-1983), starring Wendy Craig and Geoffrey Palmer.  Torry released the tune as a single in 1981.  Dolly Parton first recorded it in 1974 as the title track (and first single) from her album.
